The Chadstone of Lilongwe

Today I went shopping at the Old town markets. I love it! I now have beans, potatoes, tomatoes, pineapple, a pair of shoes, a light bulb and some material that the tailor is making into a bag for me. All for 890 kwacha (under $10dollars)

When walking in the market or down the street, it’s nearly impossible to go unnoticed.
People you don’t even know stop to ask you where you are going. I can’t walk anywhere without everyone looking at me, pointing, waving and wanting to talk. I stand out. Today I was called mama, sister, auntie, azungu, friend… and a lovely gentleman let me in front of him in a line while saying “ladies are always first…unless of course if there’s a lion around” But the classic comment for today was a young man stopping me to ask if I was Madonna… hehe…

Was it the traffic cone bra you were wearing that confused him?

BTW the Madonna adoption has been in the news in Australia which means that Malawi has had some much needed publicity. These links to a Herald-Sun blog run by Andrew Bolt might be of interest to you TJ. (I also passed on your email to him so you might get a request to be an on-the-spot reporter.)

Hey TJ, Sarah Mason here.
I'm still totally loving reading your blog...i know i'm guaranteed to get many laughs out of it, as well as having thoughts stimulated and ideas challenged. And very excited to hear that AJ and Jarrod are planning on visiting!!!
On the topic of babies...Matt & Kerri are expecting baby #2!!! And Heather and Frank's 2nd baby should be born any day now!!! So 48 new babies might not be too far off!!! :D
Interesting for me to note that some stuff you have written about Malawian culture (such as the guys holding hands thing, and everyone noticing you and stuff like that) are quite similar to experiences i had in india! So its very cool, cos there are some things i can relate to! Other things are left to the imagination, but you're doing a great job of keep that imagination active!
Lots of love,
Sarah.

Haha David.... no i was not wearing a cone bra!!! can you believe though, this mistaken identity has not been a one off occasion... thinking about buying a sign to wear on my head denying that i am madonna, or related to her in any way! hehe thanks for the links though, you wouldn't believe how many people have asked me about the madonna stuff...so have decided to make a comment from what i have heard here soon, so watch this space...

Sarah...yay... so great getting your comments... can you send me an email with your address.. having stacks of trouble replying to you, it keeps bouncing back! love you lots!!!

Shaz, you make me laugh!! well... things are overpriced the second that they see a white woman... but the shop assistants are far more covered up, dress code a little different around here...so i must agree, the comparison wasn't spot on, although boobs out in the open is totally ok here.... people wouldn't look twice if i walked around topless...maybe initially to check they look the same on a white girl..!!! not gonna happen though! :-) hope you are well mate!
